English Articles: Foreword | Английские артикли: Предисловие |
| English articles include the indefinite article a/an and the definite article the. Articles are used with nouns, and the choice of an article depends on the type of the noun and on the context. |
Английские
артикли включают в себя неопределенный артикль a/an и определенный
артикль the. Артикли употребляются с существительными, и выбор артикля
зависит от типа существительного и от контекста.
|
Types of nouns | Типы существительных |
| All nouns can be divided into two main groups: proper nouns (Mary Smith, England, the Missouri River, Monday) and common nouns (a girl, a house, a notion, a habit, water, cheese, furniture, time, information, health). |
Все
существительные можно разделить на две основные группы: имена
собственные (Mary Smith, England, the Missouri River, Monday) и
нарицательные существительные (a girl, a house, a notion, a habit,
water, cheese, furniture, time, information, health).
|
| Proper nouns, also called proper names, include people's names (James Ashton, Mary Smith), geographical names (England, the Missouri River), names of companies and organizations (the United Nations, Harvard University), names of nationalities (an Italian, the Dutch), names of months and weekdays (August, Monday), and many other notions, objects, and places that are capitalized and used as names. |
Имена
собственные включают имена людей (James Ashton, Mary Smith),
географические названия (England, the Missouri River), названия компаний
и организаций (the United Nations, Harvard University), названия
национальностей (итальянец, голландцы), названия месяцев и дней недели
(August, Monday) и многие другие понятия, предметы и места, которые
пишутся с заглавной буквы и используются как названия.
|
| Common nouns are divided into countable nouns (a girl, three girls, a house, two houses, several notions, different habits) and uncountable nouns (water, cheese, furniture, time, information, health). |
Нарицательные
существительные делятся на исчисляемые существительные (a girl, three
girls, a house, two houses, several notions, different habits) и
неисчисляемые существительные (sugar, water, furniture, time,
information, health).
|
| Countable nouns are subdivided into concrete nouns (a girl, a house) and abstract nouns (a notion, a habit). Countable nouns with regular plural form add the ending s/es to form the plural. Irregular plural forms of nouns are described in Irregular Plural Nouns in the section Writing. |
Исчисляемые
существительные подразделяются на конкретные / вещественные (a girl, a
house) и абстрактные / отвлеченные (a notion, a habit). Существительные с
правильной формой мн. числа образуют мн. число, прибавляя окончание
s/es. Неправильные формы мн. числа описаны в статье Irregular Plural
Nouns в разделе Writing.
|
| Collective nouns are a subgroup of countable nouns; they denote groups of people or animals regarded as units (a family, a crowd, the public, a herd). |
Собирательные
существительные – подгруппа исчисляемых существительных; они обозначают
группы людей или животных, рассматриваемые как единое целое (a family, a
crowd, the public, a herd).
|
| Uncountable nouns are divided into concrete nouns / mass nouns (water, cheese, furniture) and abstract nouns (time, information, health). The main distinguishing feature of uncountable nouns is that they can't be counted; consequently, they can't be used in the plural. Some uncountable nouns can be used as countable, with a different meaning (glass – a glass, time – three times), and there are other cases in which uncountable nouns can turn into countable nouns. |
Неисчисляемые
существительные делятся на конкретные существительные массы (water,
cheese, furniture) и абстрактные (time, information, health). Главная
отличительная черта неисчисляемых существительных в том, что их нельзя
посчитать; следовательно, они не употребляются во мн. числе. Некоторые
неисчисляемые существительные могут употребляться как исчисляемые, с
другим значением (стекло – стакан, время – три раза), и есть другие
случаи, в которых неисчисляемые существительные могут превращаться в
исчисляемые.
|
Use of articles with different types of nouns | Употребление артиклей с разными типами существительных |
| The indefinite article a/an is used with countable nouns in the singular. The indefinite article a/an is not used with uncountable nouns. (But there are special cases in which uncountable nouns are used as countable nouns.) The main function of the indefinite article is to name one item belonging to a class of similar items. |
Неопределенный
артикль a/an употребляется с исчисляемыми существительными в ед. числе.
Артикль a/an не употребляется с неисчисляемыми существительными. (Но
есть особые случаи употребления неисчисляемых существительных как
исчисляемых.) Главная функция неопределенного артикля – назвать один
предмет, принадлежащий к классу похожих предметов.
|
| The definite article "the" can be used with countable nouns in the singular and plural as well as with uncountable nouns. The main function of the definite article is to point out a noun and make it definite and specific. |
Определенный
артикль the может употребляться с исчисляемыми существительными в ед. и
мн. числе, а также с неисчисляемыми существительными. Главная функция
определенного артикля – выделить существительное и сделать его
определенным.
|
| The indefinite article is rarely used with proper names. The definite article can be used with certain proper names. |
Неопределенный
артикль редко употребляется с именами собственными. Определенный
артикль может употребляться с некоторыми именами собственными.
|
Difficulties in studying articles | Трудности в изучении артиклей |
| English articles are difficult for us because there are no articles in Russian. Students often have a problem deciding where and which article to use. |
Английские
артикли трудны для нас, так как в русском языке нет артиклей. Студенты
часто испытывают затруднения, решая, где и какой артикль употребить.
|
| Students sometimes try to avoid this problem by not using any articles with nouns. For example, they use "my, his, her, our, your, their, some, any" instead of the articles. Though it may be a fitting substitute in a number of cases, this method doesn't work everywhere. Here is an example of how students try to avoid articles, and how strange it may sound. |
Студенты
иногда пытаются избежать этой проблемы, не употребляя никакие артикли с
существительными. Например, они употребляют my, his, her, our, your,
their, some, any вместо артиклей. Хотя это может быть подходящей заменой
в ряде случаев, этот метод работает не везде. Вот пример того, как
студенты пытаются избежать артиклей и как странно это может звучать.
|
| Strange: I went to my kitchen, made my coffee, ate some sandwich, washed some dishes, and left for my work. |
Странно: Я пошел на мою кухню, приготовил мой кофе, съел какой-то бутерброд, вымыл несколько тарелок, и пошел на мою работу.
|
| Normal: I went to the kitchen, made coffee, ate a sandwich, washed the dishes, and left for work. |
Нормально: Я пошел на кухню, приготовил кофе, съел бутерброд, вымыл посуду и пошел на работу.
|
| You need to know how to use articles, you can't avoid them or do without them in English. You won't see "some, any" in the examples in the materials on articles. This was done on purpose, so that you could clearly see where and which article to use. |
Вам
нужно знать, как употреблять артикли, нельзя их избежать или обойтись
без них в английском. Вы не увидите some, any в примерах в материалах на
артикли. Это было сделано специально, чтобы вы могли ясно видеть, где и
какой артикль употребить.
|
| Students also say that the rules of the use of articles do not seem logical to them, and the worst thing is that in many cases either variant is possible (a/an or the), or even any of the three variants is possible (a/an, the, or no article), and this is very confusing. |
Студенты
также говорят, что правила употребления артиклей не кажутся им
логичными, а самое плохое то, что во многих случаях любой из двух
вариантов возможен (a/an или the), или даже любой из трех вариантов
возможен (a/an, the или без артикля), а это очень запутывает.
|
| Yes, variants are possible in many cases, but the meaning of the noun changes when the article changes. |
Да, варианты возможны во многих случаях, но значение существительного меняется, когда меняется артикль.
|
| He is a doctor. |
Он врач. (по профессии)
|
| He is the doctor I told you about. |
Он (тот) врач, о котором я вам говорил.
|
| There is a book on the table. |
На столе есть (какая-то) книга.
|
| The book is on the table. |
Книга (о которой мы говорим) на столе.
|
| This vase is made of glass. |
Эта ваза сделана из стекла.
|
| The glass this vase is made of is called Venetian glass. |
(То) Стекло, из которого сделана эта ваза, называется Венецианское стекло.
|
| Where are my glasses? |
Где мои очки?
|
| Could you give me a glass of water? |
Не могли бы вы мне дать стакан воды?
|
| The use of articles with different types of nouns is described in the materials of this section. Basic rules of the use of articles are described in the materials Articles: Countable Nouns, Articles: Uncountable Nouns (Parts 1, 2). Specific use of articles is described in the materials Specific Use of THE, Specific Use of a/an (Parts 3, 4). Articles in set expressions (Part 5) should be learned by heart as such, because set expressions may not follow the rules of the use of articles. |
Употребление
артиклей с различными типами существительных описано в материалах этого
раздела. Основные правила употребления описаны в материалах Articles:
Countable Nouns, Articles: Uncountable Nouns (Части 1, 2). Особое
употребление артиклей описано в материалах Specific Use of THE, Specific
Use of a/an (Части 3, 4). Артикли в устойчивых сочетаниях (Часть 5)
нужно выучить наизусть как таковые, т.к. устойчивые сочетания могут не
подчиняться правилам употребления артиклей.
|
| The other three materials in this section (Parts 6, 7, 8) show the patterns of article use with proper nouns, including names of people, geographical places, companies, schools. These patterns fall into separate groups (e.g., rivers, streets, parks, museums, holidays), and all proper names in these materials are real. The best way to study them is by comparing the examples under the two headings: No article; Article the. This will help you understand and memorize the patterns of use and exceptions. Some students formulate helpful tips on the use of articles. For example, like these: |
|
| All water on the Earth (except the lakes) is with the definite article. |
Вся вода на Земле (кроме озер) с определенным артиклем.
|
| One mountain – no article; a mountain chain – the definite article. |
Одна гора – без артикля; горная цепь – определенный артикль.
|
| Start with Part 1 and go through the materials on articles step by step. Don't jump to the materials ahead; study them in the given order. You will see the logic in the rules and patterns of article usage, and this will help you to master English articles. And don't forget to do the exercises in the subsection Exercises for Articles. They will help you to check how well you understand the use of articles. |
Начните
с Части 1 и изучите материалы на артикли шаг за шагом. Не прыгайте в
материалы впереди; изучите их в данном порядке. Вы увидите логику в
правилах и моделях употребления артиклей, и это поможет вам освоить
английские артикли. И не забудьте сделать упражнения в подразделе
Exercises for Articles. Они помогут вам проверить, насколько хорошо вы
понимаете употребление артиклей.

Как правильно употреблять артикли в английском языке
Как правильно употреблять времена английского языка
The Key to English Tenses: Adverbs of Time | Ключ к английским временам: Наречия времени |
| English tenses are used with certain adverbs of time. If you say "yesterday", you will use the past tense, not the future, right? Certain adverbs of time require certain tenses, and the connection between the tense and its adverbs of time is very tight and can't be ignored. In fact, understanding the connection between the tense and its adverbs of time is the key to understanding and using English tenses correctly. For example: |
Английские
времена употребляются с определенными наречиями времени. Если вы
скажете yesterday (вчера), вы употребите прошедшее время, а не будущее,
правильно? Определенные наречия времени требуют определенных времен, а
связь между временем и его наречиями времени очень крепкая, и ее нельзя
игнорировать. Фактически, понимание связи между временем и его наречиями
времени – это ключ к пониманию и правильному употреблению английских
времен. Например:
|
| I have just seen him. |
Я только что его видел.
|
| I saw him a minute ago. |
Я видел его минуту назад.
|
| Maybe "I have just seen him" happened earlier than "I saw him a minute ago", but the first is the present perfect, and the second is the simple past, because the adverbs of time "just" and "a minute ago" dictate the necessity to use these tenses. |
Возможно,
что «Я только что его видел» произошло раньше, чем «Я видел его минуту
назад», но первое – настоящее совершенное, а второе – простое прошедшее,
потому что наречия времени just (только что) и a minute ago (минуту
назад) диктуют необходимость употребить эти времена.
|
| So, there is a clear connection between the tense and its adverbs of time. This connection will help us to understand how English tenses are used. For example: |
Итак,
есть явная связь между временем и его наречиями времени. Эта связь
поможет нам понять, как употребляются английские времена. Например:
|
| usually: Simple present |
обычно: Простое настоящее
|
| now: Present continuous |
сейчас: Настоящее продолженное
|
| already: Present perfect |
уже: Настоящее совершенное
|
| for three hours already: Present perfect continuous |
уже в течение трех часов: Настоящее совершенное продолженное
|
| yesterday: Simple past. |
вчера: Простое прошедшее.
|
| Not all adverbs of time call for certain tenses. For example, the adverb "soon". You can say: He left soon. He will leave soon. The adverb "soon" doesn't call for a specific tense and doesn't help us to choose the right tense. |
Не
все наречия времени вызывают определенные времена. Например, наречие
soon (скоро). Вы можете сказать: Он скоро ушел. Он скоро уйдет. Наречие
soon не вызывает какое-то определенное время и не помогает нам выбрать
правильное время.
|
| By the way, native speakers often omit adverbs of time. The tense carries in itself the general meaning of its adverbs of time. For example, the sentences in the following pairs have practically the same meaning. |
Кстати,
носители языка часто опускают наречия времени. Время само несет в себе
общее значение своих наречий времени. Например, предложения в следующих
парах имеют практически одинаковое значение.
|
| I buy bread in this store. |
Я покупаю хлеб в этом магазине. (обычно)
|
| I usually buy bread in this store. |
Я обычно покупаю хлеб в этом магазине.
|
| I am buying vegetables. |
Я покупаю овощи. (сейчас)
|
| I am buying vegetables now. |
Я покупаю овощи сейчас.
|
| I have finished. |
Я закончил. (уже)
|
| I have already finished. |
Я уже закончил.
|
| But language learners can't allow themselves such familiarity with tenses. You need to establish a clear connection between the tense and its adverbs of time. So, learn the adverbs of time given in the materials on tenses in this section and use them as often as you can with the tenses that they require. |
Но
изучающие язык не могут позволить себе такой вольности с временами.
Необходимо установить четкую связь между временем и его наречиями
времени. Поэтому выучите наречия времени, данные в материалах на времена
в этом разделе, и употребляйте их как можно чаще с временами, которых
они требуют.
|
| If there is no adverb of time in some sentence with a difficult tense, find out what adverb of time is meant and put it in. If there are two adverbs of time in the sentence, ask yourself which of the two adverbs calls for this tense. For example, the adverb of time "often" can be used with all simple tenses but calls for the simple present. |
Если
в каком-то предложении с трудным временем нет наречия времени,
выясните, какое наречие времени имеется в виду, и вставьте его. Если в
предложении два наречия времени, спросите себя, которое из двух наречий
вызывает это время. Например, наречие времени often (часто) может
употребляться со всеми простыми временами, но вызывает простое
настоящее.
|
| I often go to the park. |
Я часто хожу в парк.
|
| I often went to the park last year. |
Я часто ходил в парк в прошлом году.
|
| I will probably go to the park often next year. |
Я, наверное, буду часто ходить в парк в следующем году.
|
| In the second sentence, the adverb of time "last year" calls for the simple past. In the third sentence, the simple future is required by the adverb of time "next year". |
Во
втором предложении наречие времени last year (в прошлом году) вызывает
простое прошедшее. В третьем предложении простое будущее требуется
наречием времени next year (в следующем году).
|
| Always analyze why this or that adverb of time is used in the sentence and in what meaning, and what adverb of time you should put in if it is not there. This will help you to understand what English tenses mean and how they work, and you'll start using them correctly and confidently very quickly. |
Всегда
анализируйте, почему то или другое наречие времени употреблено в
предложении, и в каком значении, и какое наречие времени нужно вставить,
если его там нет. Это поможет вам понять, что значат английские времена
и как они работают, и вы очень быстро начнете употреблять их правильно и
уверенно.
|
Time expressions | Выражения времени |
| English tenses are used with time expressions which define the time of the action in the sentence or the time relationship between the given actions. Good knowledge of time expressions is necessary for understanding and using English tenses. (A list of frequently used time expressions is given in Typical Day in the section Vocabulary.) |
Английские
времена употребляются с выражениями времени, которые определяют время
действия в предложении или временное соотношение между данными
действиями. Хорошее знание выражений времени необходимо для понимания и
употребления английских времен. (Список часто употребляемых выражений
времени дан в материале Typical Day в разделе Vocabulary.)
|
| Time expressions are often represented by adverbs of time consisting of one word: often, sometimes, rarely, never, now, already, lately, recently, yesterday, tomorrow. |
Выражения
времени часто представлены наречиями времени, состоящими из одного
слова: often, sometimes, rarely, never, now, already, lately, recently,
yesterday, tomorrow.
|
| There are many time expressions in the form of combinations of adverbs, prepositions, nouns, adjectives, numerals: at present, at the moment, up to now, since yesterday, for three days, by the time, until recently, before last month, two years ago, in the past. |
Есть
много выражений времени в виде сочетаний наречий, предлогов,
существительных, прилагательных, числительных: at present, at the
moment, up to now, since yesterday, for three days, by the time, until
recently, before last month, two years ago, in the past.
|
| In a number of cases, a subordinate clause defines the time of the action and helps us to use the right tenses in the sentence. For example: While I was reading his letter, the telephone rang. |
В
ряде случаев, придаточное предложение определяет время действия и
помогает нам употребить правильные времена в предложении. Например: В то
время как я читал его письмо, зазвонил телефон.
|
| The most common time expressions that help to choose the right tense are grouped under the heading "Adverbs of time" in the materials on tenses, though some of them are not adverbs but prepositions, conjunctions, or word combinations. |
Наиболее
употребительные выражения времени, которые помогают выбрать правильное
время, собраны под заголовком Adverbs of time в материалах на времена,
хотя некоторые из них не наречия, а предлоги, союзы, или словосочетания.
|
The most common tenses | Наиболее употребительные времена |
| One of my students once said, "I can't possibly learn 24 tenses!" That puzzled me. Where did he find 24 tenses? The student answered that he meant 12 tenses of the active voice and 12 tenses of the passive voice. |
Один
из моих студентов однажды сказал: «Ну я же не могу выучить 24 времени!»
Это меня озадачило. Где он нашел 24 времени? Студент ответил, что он
имел в виду 12 времен активного залога и 12 времен страдательного
залога.
|
| Actually, some tenses are not used at all (for example, the perfect continuous tenses are not used in the passive), and not all tenses are used in everyday speech. We will discuss all of them so that you can see the whole picture. The tenses that you should use actively in your speech and writing are listed below. (The word "some" in round brackets after some tenses means that you need to know some of the use of the indicated tense.) |
На
самом деле, некоторые времена не употребляются совсем (например,
времена perfect continuous не употребляются в пассиве), и не все времена
употребляются в разговорной речи. Мы обсудим все из них, чтобы вы
видели полную картину. Времена, которые нужно активно употреблять в
устной и письменной речи, даны ниже. (Слово "some" в круглых скобках
после некоторых времен значит, что вам нужно знать кое-что из
употребления указанного времени.)
|
| Pay attention to the fact that tenses may be called differently in different textbooks. For example, the simple present tense may be called the present indefinite tense or the present simple tense; the simple past may be called the past indefinite or the past simple. Continuous tenses may be called progressive tenses, for example, the past continuous is often called the past progressive. |
Обратите
внимание на тот факт, что времена могут называться по-разному в разных
учебниках. Например, simple present tense (простое настоящее время)
может называться present indefinite tense (настоящее неопределенное
время) или present simple tense (настоящее простое время); simple past
может называться past indefinite или past simple. Continuous tenses
могут называться progressive tenses, например, past continuous
(прошедшее продолженное) часто называют past progressive.

| That's six or seven tenses in the active and four in the passive for use in everyday speech. Plus two or three more for use in formal and business correspondence. Still more than in Russian, but we will learn them the easy way, with the help of the adverbs of time that give us the key to English tenses. |

How to memorize words | Как запоминать слова |
| There are several golden rules on how to study words and how to memorize words effectively. We recommend the following methods: |
Есть несколько золотых правил о том, как учить слова и как запоминать слова эффективно. Мы рекомендуем следующие методы:
|
| Combine words in topical groups: People, Home, Work, Traveling, Money, Food, etc. A good idea is to combine topical words with topical phrases. |
Объедините
слова в тематические группы: Люди, Дом, Работа, Путешествие, Деньги,
Еда и т.д. Очень хорошо объединять тематические слова с тематическими
фразами.
|
| Organize words in other meaningful groups, for example, Verbs of Motion, Useful Verbs, Synonyms, Synonyms and Antonyms, Necessary Adjectives. |
Объедините
слова в другие смысловые группы, например, Глаголы движения, Полезные
глаголы, Синонимы, Синонимы и антонимы, Нужные прилагательные.
|
| Always memorize words in associations (in typical word combinations and phrases), not as isolated words. The ties between words in phrases will help you to remember the word you need. Good dictionaries usually give typical phrases as examples of usage, and you can use them as your associations. |
Всегда
учите слова в ассоциациях (в типичных словосочетаниях и фразах), а не
как отдельные слова. Связи между словами во фразах помогут вам вспомнить
нужное слово. Хорошие словари обычно дают типичные фразы как примеры
употребления, и вы можете использовать их как ваши ассоциации.
|
| Looking at words from the point of view of conversation, your top priority is to memorize: |
Глядя на слова с точки зрения разговора, ваша первостепенная задача выучить:
|
| a. Words with general meaning that can be used in many situations and instead of more specific synonyms. |
a. Слова с обобщенным значением, которые могут употребляться во многих ситуациях и вместо более конкретных синонимов.
|
| b. Common, useful, simple, standard (polite and friendly) words. |
b. Общепринятые, полезные, простые, стандартные (дружелюбно-вежливые) слова.
|
| Memorization is effective only when all types of memory work together. Examine the new word closely (your visual memory works), listen to its pronunciation by a speaker (your auditory memory works), say it aloud (your articulatory memory works), and write it (your writing / kinesthetic memory works). Association memory helps you to remember how the words that you have studied are used in speech and writing, i.e., in context. To develop your association memory, always study new words together with the study of their meanings and usage in typical phrases and word combinations. |
|
| It is necessary to review new words to make sure that they go to your long-term memory and stay there. Try this method: Within two hours after you studied the words, their meanings, and examples of use, review them briefly: look, listen, say, and write. On the same day in the evening before you go to bed, do a longer review and a couple of exercises on your new words. In the morning, do a brief review of the words again. Two days after that, look through the words, their meanings, and examples of use and do more exercises on them. Then practice using your new words as often as you can in speech and writing at work, in class, on forums. |

| A good dictionary is one of the most important books a language learner should have. A good dictionary gives pronunciation, several meanings, examples of use, synonyms, and antonyms. |
| Bear in mind that it is very difficult and not very effective to memorize single words from a list, especially if the words are listed alphabetically. For example, when you are studying the topic Clothes, memorization of the words in your list of clothes will be much easier if you find pictures of people dressed in various clothes, describe them in class, and have a discussion about clothes, for example, what clothes you'd like to buy, what's in fashion these days, who's wearing what. And you will need certain phrases for such discussions. |
|
| Every group of related topical words and expressions should be combined in your list with a group of related topical phrases. Topical vocabulary lists in the section Vocabulary have corresponding collections of conversational phrases in the section Phrases. |
Каждая
группа связанных между собой слов и выражений по теме должна быть
объединена в вашем списке с группой соответствующих фраз по теме.

Грамматика английского языка. Кратко
A Brief Overview of English Grammar | Краткий обзор английской грамматики |
| All languages are divided into synthetic and analytic. At the same time, no language is completely synthetic or analytic, both features are present in every language. |
Все
языки делятся на синтетические и аналитические. В то же время, нет
языков полностью синтетических или аналитических, обе черты присутствуют
в каждом языке.
|
| Synthetic languages have a lot of different prefixes, suffixes, and endings that are added to words to show relations between words in a sentence, such as gender, person, number, case, comparison, tense, mood, active and passive voice. The main feature of synthetic languages is that suffixes and endings make the meanings of individual words and their interaction with other words in a sentence precise and clear, so that word order in a sentence can be quite free. Russian is a highly synthetic language. |
Синтетические
языки имеют много разных префиксов, суффиксов и окончаний, которые
добавляются к словам, чтобы показать отношения между словами в
предложении, такие как род, лицо, число, падеж, сравнение, время,
наклонение, активный и пассивный залог. Главная черта синтетических
языков то, что суффиксы и окончания делают значения отдельных слов и их
взаимодействие с другими словами в предложении точными и ясными, так что
порядок слов в предложении может быть весьма свободным. Русский язык
весьма синтетический язык.
|
| Analytic languages have few suffixes and endings that show gender, person, number, case, and tense. The main feature of analytic languages is that they rely on word order to show relations between words in a sentence. Word order and context help to identify precise meanings of individual words. English is largely analytic. |
Аналитические
языки имеют мало суффиксов и окончаний, которые показывают род, лицо,
число, падеж и время. Главная черта аналитических языков то, что они
полагаются на порядок слов для показа отношений между словами в
предложении. Порядок слов и контекст помогают выявить точные значения
отдельных слов. Английский язык в значительной степени аналитический.
|
| This major difference between English and Russian is the main cause of most difficulties that Russian-speaking students encounter in studying English. The most important norms of English grammar are very briefly and very generally described below. |
Эта
основная разница между английским и русским языками – главная причина
большинства трудностей, с которыми сталкиваются студенты, говорящие на
русском языке, в изучении английского языка. Наиболее важные нормы
английской грамматики очень кратко и в общих чертах описаны ниже.

NOUNS | Существительные |
| English nouns are divided into proper nouns (John Brown, Europe, October) and common nouns (a boy, a book, an idea, milk, equipment, kindness). Common nouns are divided into countable nouns (a boy, a book, an idea) and uncountable nouns (milk, equipment, kindness). Countable nouns are divided into concrete nouns (a boy, a book) and abstract nouns (an idea). Uncountable nouns are divided into concrete nouns (milk, equipment) and abstract nouns (kindness). |
Английские
существительные делятся на имена собственные (John Brown, Europe,
October) и нарицательные существительные (a boy, a book, an idea, milk,
equipment, kindness). Нарицательные существительные делятся на
исчисляемые (a boy, a book, an idea) и неисчисляемые (milk, equipment,
kindness). Исчисляемые существительные делятся на конкретные (a boy, a
book) и абстрактные (an idea). Неисчисляемые существительные делятся на
конкретные (milk, equipment) и абстрактные (kindness).
|
| Countable nouns have the category of number: one chair – two chairs; a house – three houses; a boy – boys. Countable nouns generally form the plural by adding the ending s/es: a ball – balls; a table – tables; a play – plays; a city – cities; a cow – cows; a bridge – bridges; a class – classes; a tax – taxes; a knife – knives. (See Adding the Ending s/es to Nouns and Verbs in the section Writing.) |
Исчисляемые
существительные имеют категорию числа: один стул – два стула; дом – три
дома; мальчик – мальчики. Исчисляемые существительные в основном
образуют мн. число прибавлением окончания s/es: мяч – мячи; стол –
столы; игра – игры; город – города; корова – коровы; мост – мосты; класс
– классы; налог – налоги; нож – ножи. (См. Adding the Ending s/es to
Nouns and Verbs в разделе Writing.)
|
| A limited number of nouns have irregular plural forms: a man – men; a woman – women; a child – children; a tooth – teeth; a sheep – sheep; a crisis – crises; a formula – formulae; a stimulus – stimuli. (See Irregular Plural Nouns in the section Writing.) |
Ограниченное
число существительных имеют неправильные формы мн. числа: мужчина –
мужчины; женщина – женщины; ребенок – дети; зуб – зубы; овца – овцы;
кризис – кризисы; формула – формулы; стимул – стимулы. (См. Irregular
Plural Nouns в разделе Writing.)
|
| Uncountable nouns can't be counted: air, water, sugar, gold, chemistry, education, help, love, progress, energy, economics. They don't have the category of number and don't take the ending s/es. |
Неисчисляемые
существительные нельзя сосчитать: воздух, вода, сахар, золото, химия,
образование, помощь, любовь, прогресс, энергия, экономика. Они не имеют
категории числа и не принимают окончание s/es.
|
| English nouns don't have any suffixes or endings to show gender. (Only the personal pronouns "he, she, it" and their forms show gender.) There are some nouns with the feminine suffix "ess": hostess, stewardess, actress, waitress, princess, baroness, goddess, lioness. But on the whole, gender in English is connected only to the meaning of nouns. For example: |
Существительные
не имеют суффиксов или окончаний для показа рода. (Только личные
местоимения he, she, it и их формы показывают род.) Есть некоторые
существительные с женским суффиксом "ess": хозяйка, стюардесса, актриса,
официантка, принцесса, баронесса, богиня, львица. Но в целом, род в
английском языке привязан только к значению существительных. Например:
|
| Tom, man, boy, father, son, brother, husband, uncle, nephew, king, lord, mister have masculine gender (he). |
Том, мужчина, мальчик, отец, сын, брат, муж, дядя, племянник, король, лорд, мистер имеют мужской род (he).
|
| Anna, woman, girl, mother, daughter, sister, wife, aunt, niece, queen, lady, madam have feminine gender (she). |
Анна, женщина, девочка, мать, дочь, сестра, жена, тётя, племянница, королева, леди, мадам имеют женский род (she).
|
| A teacher, doctor, author, captain, secretary, student, friend, thief, cook can be "he" or "she". |
Учитель, врач, автор, капитан, секретарь, студент, друг, вор, повар может быть he или she.
|
| An animal is generally "it", but if necessary, you can indicate gender by using "he" or "she": My cat is very clever. She understands everything. |
Животное обычно it, но если нужно, можно указать род, употребив he или she: Моя кошка очень умная. Она всё понимает.
|
| "It" is used when referring to an inanimate object or an abstract noun: table, book, window, money, laughter, truth, health. |
It
употребляется в отношении неодушевленного предмета или абстрактного
существительного: стол, книга, окно, деньги, смех, правда, здоровье.
|
| All nouns are "they" in the plural (if they have the plural form). |
Все существительные they (они) во мн. числе (если у них есть форма мн. числа).
|
| Animate nouns can show possession and belonging (the so-called possessive case) by adding the apostrophe and "s": Tom's book, the doctor's house; my friend's car, my friends' car; the dog's name, the dogs' names; the ladies' room, the men's room, children's books. (See Adding the Apostrophe to Nouns in the section Writing.) |
Одушевленные
существительные могут показывать обладание и принадлежность (так
называемый притяжательный падеж), прибавляя апостроф и "s": книга Тома,
дом доктора; машина моего друга, машина моих друзей; кличка собаки,
клички собак; женский туалет, мужской туалет, детские книги. (См. Adding
the Apostrophe to Nouns в разделе Writing.)
|
| Nouns don't have any case endings. Word order and prepositions show which noun is the subject of the sentence, and which is an object. |
Существительные
не имеют никаких падежных окончаний. Порядок слов и предлоги
показывают, которое из существительных подлежащее в предложении, а
которое дополнение.
|
| The boy likes the cat. |
Мальчик любит кота.
|
| The cat likes the boy. |
Кот любит мальчика.
|
| The old man gave the cat to the boy. |
Старик отдал кота мальчику.
|
| Many English nouns don't have any suffixes that mark them as nouns; for example, city – noun; pretty – adjective; copy – noun or verb; sparrow – noun; tomorrow – adverb; narrow – adjective; borrow – verb. |
Многие
существительные не имеют суффиксов, которые помечают их как
существительные; например, city – существительное; pretty –
прилагательное; copy – существительное или глагол; sparrow –
существительное; tomorrow – наречие; narrow – прилагательное; borrow –
глагол.
|
| At the same time, there are many suffixes that signal that the word is a noun. Some noun suffixes are: |
В то же время, есть много суффиксов, сообщающих, что слово существительное. Некоторые суффиксы существительных:
|
| -ment: argument, document; |
аргумент, документ;
|
| -ness: kindness, happiness; |
доброта, счастье;
|
| -ion: station, illusion; |
станция, иллюзия;
|
| -er, -or: worker, doctor; |
работник, доктор;
|
| -ism: capitalism, idealism; |
капитализм, идеализм;
|
| -ist: idealist, psychologist; |
идеалист, психолог;
|
| -age: courage, passage; |
смелость, проход;

| -ty, -ity: safety, clarity; |
безопасность, ясность;
|
| -ship: friendship, ownership; |

| -ance, -ence: distance, absence; |
расстояние, отсутствие;
|
| -ency: agency, urgency; |
агентство, срочность;
|
| -ure: picture, treasure. |
картина, сокровище.
|
| Still, the most reliable way to recognize a noun is by the word order and the immediate surrounding in the sentence. For example, the phrases "a book, a new book, his book, the book, the book has, the books have" show that the words "book, books" are nouns. |
Все
же, наиболее надежный способ узнать существительное – по порядку слов и
ближайшему окружению в предложении. Например, фразы a book, a new book,
his book, the book, the book has, the books have показывают, что слова
book, books являются существительными.
|
ARTICLES | Артикли |
| There are two articles in English: the definite article "the" and the indefinite article "a/an". The article shows whether the noun before which it stands is specific (the book, the books) or some / any (a book). (See Articles Foreword and related materials on articles in the section Grammar.) |
В
английском языке два артикля: определенный артикль the и неопределенный
артикль a/an. Артикль показывает, определенное ли существительное,
перед которым он стоит (the book, the books) или какое-то / любое (a
book). (См. Articles Foreword и другие материалы на артикли в разделе
Grammar.)
|
ADJECTIVES | Прилагательные |
| Adjectives don't have any means to show gender, number, or case. Adjectives form two degrees of comparison. One-syllable adjectives (and some two-syllable adjectives) form the comparative and superlative degrees by adding the suffixes "er, est". Adjectives consisting of three or more syllables (and many adjectives of two syllables) form degrees of comparison with the help of "more, most". (See Degrees of Comparison in the section Miscellany.) |
Прилагательные
не имеют средств для показа рода, числа или падежа. Прилагательные
образуют две степени сравнения. Односложные прилагательные (и некоторые
двусложные прилагательные) образуют сравнительную и превосходную
степени, прибавляя суффиксы "er, est". Прилагательные, состоящие из трех
и более слогов (и многие прилагательные из двух слогов), образуют
степени сравнения с помощью "more, most". (См. Degrees of Comparison в
разделе Miscellany.)

| Note: Some of these prefixes are also used with other parts of speech; for example, undo, unsettle – verbs; until – preposition; increase – verb or noun; imply – verb. |
Примечание:
Некоторые из этих префиксов употребляются и с другими частями речи;
например, undo, unsettle – глаголы; until – предлог; increase – глагол
или существительное; imply – глагол.
|
| The most reliable way to recognize an adjective is by the word order and the immediate surrounding in the sentence. For example, the phrases "a tall tree, the tallest tree, my tall trees" show that the word "tall" is an attribute. |
Наиболее
надежный способ узнать прилагательное – по порядку слов и ближайшему
окружению в предложении. Например, фразы a tall tree, the tallest tree,
my tall trees показывают, что слово tall – определение.
|
ADVERBS | Наречия |
| Some adverbs have the suffix "ly" (simply, happily, probably, usually); other adverbs have no suffix (often, never, maybe, here, there). |
Некоторые
наречия имеют суффикс "ly" (simply, happily, probably, usually); другие
наречия не имеют суффикса (often, never, maybe, here, there).
|
| Some adverbs have the same form as adjectives. For example, "fast, far, hard, low, early, daily, weekly" can be adjectives or adverbs. The only way to distinguish such adverbs from adjectives is by their place and function in a sentence. Adjectives describe the noun, while adverbs describe the verb. |
Некоторые
наречия по форме одинаковы с прилагательными. Например, fast, far,
hard, low, early, daily, weekly могут быть прилагательными или
наречиями. Единственный способ отличить такие наречия от прилагательных –
по их месту и функции в предложении. Прилагательные описывают
существительное, а наречия описывают глагол.
|
| It is his daily work. (daily – adjective) |
Это его ежедневная работа. (daily – прилагательное)
|
| He studies daily. (daily – adverb) |
Он занимается ежедневно. (daily – наречие)

Порядковые
числительные показывают место в ряду. Обычно, порядковые числительные
употребляются с определенным артиклем. Любое порядковое числительное
кроме "first, second, third" (первый, второй, третий) имеет суффикс
"th". Примеры:
|
| fifth, sixth, eighth, ninth, twelfth, fifteenth, nineteenth, twentieth, twenty-fourth, thirtieth, forty-fifth, hundredth. |

| English verbs can be described from different sides: main verbs, auxiliary verbs, modal verbs; regular and irregular verbs, transitive and intransitive verbs. (See Verbs Glossary of Terms in the section Grammar.) |
Английские
глаголы можно описать с разных сторон: основные, вспомогательные и
модальные глаголы; правильные и неправильные глаголы, переходные и
непереходные глаголы. (См. Verbs Glossary of Terms в разделе Grammar.)

|
Main verbs | Основные глаголы |
| Main verbs are notional verbs: work, live, play, study, go, cry, kiss, fix, catch. Main verbs have only one ending that shows person and number: the ending s/es, which is added to the base form of the verb in the third person singular of the Simple Present tense. Compare: |
Основные
глаголы – это смысловые глаголы: работать, жить, играть, учиться, идти,
плакать, целовать, уладить, поймать. Основные глаголы имеют только одно
окончание для показа лица и числа: окончание s/es, которое прибавляется
к базовой форме глагола в 3 лице ед. числа Простого настоящего времени.
Сравните:
|
| No endings: I/we/you/they work, live, play, go, study, cry, kiss, fix, catch; |
Нет окончаний: I/we/you/they work, live, play, go, study, cry, kiss, fix, catch;

(См. Adding the Ending s/es to Nouns and Verbs в разделе Writing.)
|
Auxiliary verbs | Вспомогательные глаголы |
| Auxiliary verbs (be, have, will, do) perform different functions: the verb "be" helps to form the Continuous tenses in the Active Voice and all tenses in the Passive Voice and works as a linking verb; the verb "have" helps to form the Perfect tenses; the verb "will" helps to form the Future tenses; the verb "do" helps to form questions and answers in the Simple Present and Simple Past. |
Вспомогательные
глаголы (be, have, will, do) выполняют разные функции: глагол be
помогает образовывать Продолженные времена в Активном залоге и все
времена в Страдательном залоге и работает как глагол-связка; глагол have
помогает образовывать Перфектные времена; глагол will помогает
образовывать Будущие времена; глагол do помогает образовывать вопросы и
ответы в Простом настоящем и Простом прошедшем.

|
Modal verbs | Модальные глаголы |
| Modal verbs (can, could, may, might, must, should, will, would) are sometimes called defective verbs, because they can't form the tenses in the regular way and can't be used without a main verb. Modal verbs describe the speaker's attitude to the action expressed by the main verb. |
Модальные
глаголы (can, could, may, might, must, should, will, would) иногда
называют недостаточными глаголами, т.к. они не могут образовывать
времена обычным способом и не могут употребляться без основного глагола.
Модальные глаголы описывают отношение говорящего к действию,
выраженному основным глаголом.

|
Regular and irregular verbs | Правильные и неправильные глаголы |
| Regular verbs form the Simple Past tense and the past participle by adding the ending "ed" to the base form of the verb: work – worked – worked; play – played – played; copy – copied – copied; borrow – borrowed – borrowed. (See Adding the Endings ed, ing to Verbs in the section Writing.) |
Правильные
глаголы образуют Простое прошедшее время и причастие прошедшего
времени, прибавляя окончание "ed" к базовой форме глагола: work – worked
– worked; play – played – played; copy – copied – copied; borrow –
borrowed – borrowed. (См. Adding the Endings ed, ing to Verbs в разделе
Writing.)
|
| Irregular verbs form the Simple Past tense and the past participle by changing the root of the word: take – took – taken; go – went – gone; buy – bought – bought; sit – sat – sat; be – was/were – been. (See Irregular Verbs in the section Writing.) |
Неправильные
глаголы образуют Простое прошедшее время и причастие прошедшего
времени, изменяя корень слова: take – took – taken; go – went – gone;
buy – bought – bought; sit – sat – sat; be – was/were – been. (См.
Irregular Verbs в разделе Writing.)
|
Infinitive, gerund, participle | Инфинитив, герундий, причастие |
| All verbs, except modal verbs, have four verbal forms: the infinitive, the gerund, the present participle, and the past participle. These verbal forms are called verbals or non-finite forms of the verb. |
Все
глаголы, кроме модальных глаголов, имеют четыре отглагольных формы:
инфинитив, герундий, причастие настоящего времени и причастие прошедшего
времени. Эти отглагольные формы называются неличные формы глагола.
|
| The infinitive is the base form of the verb plus the particle "to": to read, to go, to jump. (See The Infinitive in the section Grammar.) The infinitive loses the particle "to" after modal verbs. Compare: |
Инфинитив
– это базовая форма глагола плюс частица to: читать, идти, прыгать.

| He likes to read. |
Он любит читать.
|
| She can read. |
Она может читать.
|
| He wants to go. |
Он хочет идти.
|
| He must go. |

|
| The letter was sent yesterday. |
Письмо было отправлено вчера.
|
| I saw two broken chairs. |
Я увидел два сломанных стула.
|
English tenses | Английские времена |
| English verbs have a rather complicated system of tenses. Only two endings can be added directly to the base form of the verb: the ending s/es for the third person singular in the Simple Present tense and the ending "ed" for all persons in the Simple Past tense (regular verbs only). The Simple Present and the Simple Past in the Active Voice have tense forms consisting of one word. All the other tenses are formed by certain combinations of the auxiliary verbs "be, have, will" with the infinitive (without the particle "to"), with the present participle, or with the past participle of the main verb. (See Key to English Tenses and related materials in the section Grammar.) |
Английские
глаголы имеют весьма сложную систему времен. Только два окончания можно
прибавить прямо к базовой форме глагола: окончание s/es для 3 лица ед.
числа в Простом настоящем времени и окончание "ed" для всех лиц в
Простом прошедшем времени (только правильные глаголы). Простое настоящее
и Простое прошедшее в действительном залоге имеют временные формы,
состоящие из одного слова. Все остальные времена образуются
определенными комбинациями вспомогательных глаголов be, have, will с
инфинитивом (без частицы to), с причастием настоящего времени или с
причастием прошедшего времени основного глагола. (См. Key to English
Tenses и другие материалы по этой теме в разделе Grammar.)

PREPOSITIONS and POSTPOSITIONS | Предлоги и послелоги |
| Prepositions and postpositions are the same in form but different in function. |
Предлоги и послелоги одинаковы по форме, но различны по функции.
|
| A preposition is used with a noun (or pronoun) and stands before it, forming a phrase that functions as an indirect object or an adverbial modifier in a sentence. Prepositions are traditionally divided into prepositions of place (on the street, in the house, at the airport), prepositions of direction (to the river, through the park), prepositions of time (at two o'clock, in 1995, for a year, on Monday), prepositions of manner (by train, with a key), and some others. |
Предлог
употребляется с существительным (или местоимением) и стоит перед ним,
образуя фразу, которая работает как косвенное дополнение или
обстоятельство в предложении. Предлоги традиционно делятся на предлоги
места (на улице, в доме, в аэропорту), предлоги направления (к реке,
через парк), предлоги времени (в два часа, в 1995, в течение года, в
понедельник), предлоги образа действия (поездом, ключом) и некоторые
другие.
|
| A postposition is used with a verb and stands after it, forming an idiomatic phrase with this verb (phrasal verb), e.g., come in, get back, turn out, put on, break down, pick up, take off, think over. (See Phrasal Verbs Introduction and related materials in the section Idioms.) |
Послелог
употребляется с глаголом и стоит за ним, образуя идиоматическую фразу с
этим глаголом (фразовый глагол), например, войти, вернуться, оказаться,
надеть, сломаться, подобрать, взлететь, обдумать. (См. Phrasal Verbs
Introduction и другие материалы по этой теме в разделе Idioms.)
